Neighbor Spotlight: Jim Shallcross

It’s well known that volunteers go the extra mile each time they get out to serve. Special recognition needs to be given to those who go beyond what is asked and demonstrate true love for their neighbors.

Jim Shallcross, from St. Michael’s, is one such individual who went above and beyond what was requested of him simply because he saw a great need in his care receiver.

Jim consistently responds to the many transportation requests made by care receivers to The Center. Jeanne Ullrich notes that “he is an asset to our organization.” Whether he’s called to drive to UNC, Duke or simply within Cary, Jim’s generosity is evident.

As volunteers, The Center makes every effort to prepare you for possible scenarios that may arise. Jim came across an unusual case recently when he arrived at his care receiver’s home. Knowing the care receiver recently moved, Jim expected to see boxes stacked up around the new residence. What Jim saw was the care receiver living in an empty home.

Jim could ignore what he saw, take the care receiver to his appointment and go about his day; or he could report the need to The Center for someone else to handle. Instead, he helped the care receiver go to where his belongings were stored and moved as much of the essential things over to the care receiver’s new home as he could transport. Jim also helped put the furniture together again.

Jim Shallcross demonstrated the kindness and love all our volunteers give to their care receivers. We are grateful for Jim and his wonderful service to The Center and our care receivers.
